MAA History

MAA’s focus on apartment property ownership and management originated with the company founder, George Cates and The Cates Company in 1977.  Initially managing a single apartment community comprising  333 apartment units in Memphis, TN, The Cates Company grew and ultimately combined a portfolio of 19 apartment communities to create a new publicly-owned company called Mid-America Apartment Communities, Inc .   Mid-America Apartment Communities, Inc. became a publicly traded company in 1994, at an IPO of $19.75 per share. The company experienced accelerated growth throughout the 1990’s, with the purchase of America First REIT in 1995, followed by the acquisition of a development and apartment management company in 1997.

On October 1, 2013, MAA underwent its biggest transformation to date with the merger of Colonial Properties Trust.  With the combination of MAA and Colonial Properties Trust, MAA became the dominant apartment company focused exclusively on the high-growth Southeast and Southwest regions of the U.S.A. As of December 31, 2014, MAA owned or had ownership interest in 82,316 operating apartment homes in 268 communities in 14 states. Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, MAA is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MAA and is included in the S&P MidCap 400 index.

MAA's corporate charity, The Open Arms Foundation, was founded in 1994, and since that time has provided nearly 2,200 families in medical crisis with over 110,000 nights of rest.  Open Arms was the first recipient of The Good Neighbor Award for Outstanding Community Service from The National Multi Housing Council.

The company was first recognized in 2003 as one of the Best Places To Work, and since then is consistently named among the Best Places to Work by both Memphis Business Journal and BusinessTN Magazine.
